Surge in Passenger Movement at Benapole Checkpost
The Benapole international checkpost has witnessed a significant increase in passenger movement as many Bangladeshis travel to India to celebrate the Durga Puja holiday. This surge is driven by a variety of reasons, including family reunions, medical treatments, and leisure trips.
According to Officer-in-Charge of Benapole Immigration Police Elias Hossain Munshi, 9,427 Bangladeshi passport holders traveled to India within six days up to Saturday. This figure represents nearly double the number recorded ten days ago, indicating a clear upward trend in cross-border travel.
Most of the outbound passengers came from districts such as Khulna, Bagerhat, Narail, and Dhaka. These areas are known for their close proximity to the border and strong cultural ties with Indian states like West Bengal. The festival of Durga Puja holds particular significance for these communities, as it is a time for family gatherings and religious observances.
Impact on Cross-Border Travel and Trade
Despite the increased passenger flow, trade via Benapole and Sonamasjid remains suspended during the Puja period. This suspension is primarily due to the heightened security measures and the focus on managing the influx of travelers.
Sunil Ghosh, a passenger, shared his experience of planning a trip to Kolkata during the long Puja holiday. He mentioned that he rarely gets time to travel due to work commitments, making this trip a special opportunity to be with his family. Similarly, Sudhir Mondal expressed his intention to celebrate the festival with relatives in Kolkata, highlighting the emotional and cultural importance of the event.
Faisal Ahsan Sajib, Assistant Director at Benapole port, noted that if India resumes its previous visa facilities for Bangladeshi travelers, cross-border passenger flow could see further growth. This would not only enhance tourism but also boost government revenue through increased transactions and services.
Visa Restrictions and Their Effects
India suspended regular visas for Bangladeshis on August 5, 2024, and later allowed only limited medical and emergency visas. During this period, only 70 to 80 Bangladeshi passengers crossed daily, reflecting a sharp decline in cross-border movement.
However, due to the Durga Puja holiday, India has slightly relaxed visa issuance for Bangladeshi passport holders. As a result, approximately 2,000 to 2,500 Bangladeshis are now crossing into India every day through Benapole. This relaxation has provided much-needed relief to travelers and has contributed to a more vibrant cross-border interaction.

While the temporary visa relaxation has been beneficial, there is a need for a more sustainable approach to visa policies that can accommodate the growing demand for travel and trade.
