A Vibrant Celebration of Faith and Culture in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has once again captured the hearts of international visitors with its rich cultural traditions, particularly during the Meskel-Demera celebrations. The festival, held at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, drew a diverse group of foreign tourists who were deeply moved by the vibrant and meaningful event.

The Meskel festival marks the Finding of the True Cross, an important religious occasion for Ethiopians. Central to the celebration is the burning of a large bonfire known as Demera, which symbolizes the burning of incense used to locate the Cross that had been buried under dirt and filth for many years. This powerful ritual, combined with colorful processions and communal gatherings, created an atmosphere of unity and spiritual significance.

Foreign tourists who attended the festival expressed awe at the deep-rooted traditions and the warmth of the Ethiopian people. Renarldo Head, an American tourist, described his first visit as an unforgettable experience. “It’s incredibly beautiful here. This is my first visit, and I feel truly blessed to experience such a powerful celebration,” he said. He was particularly struck by the sense of community and the strong emphasis on love and support among the locals.

Head also highlighted the importance of spirituality during the festival, noting that it reflects the unique aspects of Ethiopian life. He suggested that Ethiopia, often referred to as the Origin of Mankind, offers a model of values that emphasize connection over materialism. “Rather than focusing solely on money, what's truly important is to love and support one another,” he said.

Another American visitor, Michael Epstein, echoed similar sentiments. “This is my first visit, and it already feels like home,” he shared. Epstein praised the festival as a powerful expression of faith and solidarity, calling it a moving experience to see so many people coming together in unity. He encouraged others to visit Ethiopia, describing it as the cradle of humanity—a place everyone should consider a pilgrimage.

David Phillips, a British tourist, reflected on his first time attending the Demera ceremony, despite having visited Ethiopia multiple times before. “This is something truly extraordinary,” he said. Having traveled extensively across East Africa, Phillips emphasized that Ethiopia stands out for its rich culture, history, and diversity. “There's so much to explore here—more than in all of East Africa combined,” he added. He praised the kindness of the Ethiopian people and expressed his desire to return.

Gaby Abonsamra, a tourist from Lebanon, shared his excitement about experiencing Ethiopia’s Christian traditions. “I’m thrilled to meet the people and experience the rich Christian traditions here,” he said. He was deeply moved by the sight of people dressed in white garments, celebrating the glorification of the Holy Cross. “Seeing this level of devotion and unity is truly significant,” he noted. Abonsamra urged others to preserve and uphold these traditions, calling Ethiopia a holy land with a rich spiritual heritage.
