For those seeking a seamless and enjoyable travel experience, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) has emerged as the top choice. According to JD Power’s North America Airport Satisfaction Study, which surveyed 30,439 travelers from the U.S. and Canada who flew within the last 30 days, MSP scored an impressive 660 out of 1,000 points. This rating places it ahead of other major airports like Detroit Metropolitan, Phoenix Sky Harbor, John F. Kennedy International (JFK), and Dallas/Fort Worth.
Michael Taylor, managing director of travel, hospitality, and retail at JD Power, highlighted several factors that contributed to MSP's success. He noted that the airport was easy to access, with friendly staff, well-maintained facilities, and a wide range of food, drink, and retail options. Passengers also expressed trust in the airport’s operations.
The improvements in TSA PreCheck have played a significant role in enhancing the passenger experience at MSP. This program allows travelers to keep their belts, jackets, and laptops on during security checks, significantly reducing wait times. Additionally, the TSA introduced expedited lanes and discounts for U.S. military members as part of its 'Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease' initiative. These changes have helped make the airport more efficient and user-friendly.
While MSP leads the rankings, other airports are working to catch up. Detroit Metropolitan, a previous winner of JD Power awards, is upgrading its dining options to improve its appeal. JFK and Dallas/Fort Worth are currently undergoing major construction projects, which have affected their scores but are expected to result in better experiences once completed.
Taylor pointed out that Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is in the middle of construction, which is causing some disruptions. However, the long-term goal is to provide a more streamlined and enjoyable airport experience. Similarly, JFK is facing challenges due to ongoing construction, which is impacting accessibility and overall satisfaction.
On the other end of the spectrum, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) received a poor score, largely due to overcrowding and the need for terminal upgrades. O’Hare was recently named the nation's most stressful airport, with passengers reporting high levels of frustration. Taylor explained that the airport has yet to begin its major terminal reconstruction, which is expected to take years.
Newark Liberty International Airport finished last in the rankings, primarily due to access issues and air traffic problems. While the airport is undergoing Terminal B construction and inter-terminal train restoration, improvements at large airports often require years of planning and execution. Taylor emphasized that access issues can create anxiety among travelers, making it difficult for them to enjoy the airport’s offerings.
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest in the nation, handled 5.12 million passengers in August. Despite its high volume, it only made it into the top 15 in the study. However, its food scene remains a favorite among travelers.
Other airports across the globe are also striving to improve their services. Manchester Airport, for example, has faced criticism for overcrowded terminals and slow security processes. Meanwhile, the UK’s worst airport continues to struggle with long queues and unhelpful staff. Efforts to improve these experiences are ongoing, with many airports investing in new infrastructure and enhanced customer service.
