Nigeria's Quartet Tackle Continental Challenge as 2025/26 CAF Campaign Kicks Off

Nigerian Clubs Prepare for CAF Campaign in 2025
As the month of September 2025 approaches, the atmosphere surrounding Nigerian club football is filled with excitement and anticipation. This year marks the start of another Confederation of African Football (CAF) interclub campaign, with four Nigerian teams representing the nation on the continental stage: Remo Stars, Rivers United, Kwara United, and Abia Warriors. Each of these clubs carries a unique story and aspirations as they aim to bring glory to their country.
Remo Stars, the NPFL champions, are looking for redemption after previous setbacks. They will face US Zilimadjou of Comoros in the preliminary round, starting with a match at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta. The team has been working hard to strengthen its squad and improve tactics, determined to avoid past mistakes. If they succeed, they will face Mamelodi Sundowns, a formidable opponent with a strong history in CAF competitions.
Rivers United, the runners-up in the NPFL, are also eager to make their mark. They have drawn against the league champions from the Democratic Republic of Congo, setting up a challenging first match in Kinshasa. The team's coach, Finidi George, is focused on turning promise into consistency. Their home matches in Port Harcourt will be crucial as they look to progress further in the competition.
Kwara United, who earned their spot in the Confederation Cup by winning the Federation Cup, face an early challenge against Asante Kotoko of Ghana. This draw presents both a test and an opportunity for the Harmony Boys. Coach Tunde Sanni has expressed confidence in his team's ability to handle the pressure, backed by recent sponsorship deals that provide financial support.
Abia Warriors, the smallest of the four, are making their debut in a CAF competition. Based in Umuahia, this modest side is preparing for their first appearance against Djoliba AC of Mali. While the odds may be against them, the team is driven by the desire to prove themselves on the continental stage. Every step forward is seen as a learning experience, and the fans are hopeful for some surprises along the way.
The CAF campaign this year is historic, with a record number of 120 clubs participating—62 in the Champions League and 58 in the Confederation Cup. This increase in participation highlights the growing interest in African club football. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has also doubled the financial support for preliminary round participants, providing much-needed assistance for clubs dealing with travel and logistics expenses.
The preliminary rounds will take place across two weekends in September, with winners advancing to second-round ties in October. From there, the victorious teams will enter the lucrative group stages, beginning in November. Knockout rounds will commence in March 2026, with dreams of continental finals on the horizon.
Nigerian clubs have faced challenges in recent years, with no team reaching the Champions League group stage since Lobi Stars in the 2018/2019 season. Despite these difficulties, the determination of the four teams remains strong. As the country watches closely, the hope is that this year will bring new successes and a renewed sense of pride for Nigerian football.
