A Homecoming and New Chapter for Sam Heughan

Sam Heughan, best known for his role in the global TV sensation Outlander, has made a significant return to his roots by purchasing a distillery in Dumfries, the town where he was born and raised. This move marks not only a personal milestone but also an effort to boost tourism in the region, particularly in Galloway, which is often overlooked compared to other Scottish destinations.

Heughan shared his sentiments with The Scotland on Sunday, emphasizing that this venture is a true homecoming. “I was born and raised here and I feel very, very thankful to come from such an amazing place,” he said. He noted that while many tourists visit Scotland’s northern regions like Skye or Glencoe, there are countless hidden gems in Galloway that deserve attention.

To celebrate this unique part of Scotland, Heughan has renamed the Crafty Distillery to Galloway Distillery, paying homage to the surrounding landscape. The new name reflects the area’s rich terroir and history, and it will also serve as a platform to showcase Heughan’s award-winning Sassenach spirits. These include his blended Scotch Whisky and Wild Scottish Gin, both crafted using locally foraged botanicals from Dumfries and Galloway.

At the launch event, Heughan hinted at the possibility of introducing a new addition to the Sassenach range—a fresh whisky blend. This announcement highlights his commitment to innovation and quality in the spirits industry.

Beyond the distillery, Heughan is passionate about promoting all the attractions that Dumfries and Galloway have to offer. His childhood memories include exploring the ruins of Kenmure Castle, where he once stood triumphantly on its highest point. “At that time I would never have imagined I would return, decades later, after traveling the world and delighting in other cultures, to literally walk back through the playground of my youth,” he reflected.

He encourages others to experience the magic of Galloway, urging them to lose themselves in its landscapes and history. “I dare you to lose yourself like I did, to travel back in time. To experience the magic that Galloway has to offer.”

Craig Rankin, the master distiller and commercial manager at the distillery for nearly a decade, emphasized the deep connection Heughan has with Galloway. “Sam grew up here and Galloway is close to his heart. It’s an understatement to say that he’s invested in Scotland, Galloway, and creating spirits. He feels it deeply.”

This venture is more than just a business endeavor; it's a heartfelt tribute to the place that shaped him. As Heughan continues to explore new opportunities, his journey remains rooted in the beauty and heritage of Galloway. From the rugged landscapes to the historical significance of places like Kenmure Castle, there is much to discover in this corner of Scotland.
