Serengeti Awards Honors Tourism Leaders in December

Recognition of Excellence in Tanzania’s Tourism Sector
The government of Tanzania has announced the presentation of 56 awards to tourism stakeholders, celebrating their significant contributions to the sector's achievements. These awards, known as the Serengeti Awards, are being held for the second time and will take place on December 19, 2025.
Dr Hassan Abbas, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, shared these details during a press conference inside the Ngorongoro Crater on September 27, 2025. He emphasized that the initiative is not only about celebrating past successes but also about encouraging future investment and innovation within the tourism industry.
Tanzania has made remarkable progress through its tourism sector, surpassing the initial target of five million visitors. The country now welcomes over 5.3 million tourists annually and generates revenues exceeding $3.9 billion (approximately Sh9 trillion). Dr Abbas questioned why the stakeholders and investors who contributed to this success should not be honored.
The Serengeti Awards are divided into seven categories, each highlighting different aspects of the tourism industry. One of the most notable categories is the People’s Choice Award, which allows the public to vote for companies, hotels, or individuals they believe have had the greatest impact on tourism. Other categories include recognition for pioneers in tourism enterprises, outstanding tour guides, hotels with exceptional service, conservation champions, top exhibitors at tourism fairs, and innovators who introduced new tourism products that generate significant income.
The announcement coincided with the global observance of World Tourism Day on September 27. Dr Abbas highlighted that tourism has become Tanzania’s leading foreign exchange earner, creating over 2.5 million jobs and establishing the country as a premier African destination.
He further explained that the government is investing in improved infrastructure and a favorable investment climate to attract more players to the tourism sector. “Our ambition is clear. We aim to reach eight million tourist arrivals by 2030,” he added.
Mr Athumani Njiku, a tour guide with Solo Adventure, welcomed the awards, emphasizing that the benefits of tourism growth are tangible on the ground. “Tourism growth is not just numbers on paper. It is transforming livelihoods. We see guides, communities, and entrepreneurs all benefiting directly,” he said.
Njiku also pointed out that initiatives like the Serengeti Awards go beyond mere recognition. They set benchmarks of excellence and motivate both local and international stakeholders to raise standards further. Additionally, these awards help promote Tanzania’s image globally as a sustainable and competitive destination.
