Vietnam Emerges as Top Destination for Expats Seeking Employment Opportunities
Vietnam has recently climbed to the 5th position among the best places for expats worldwide, marking a significant rise in its appeal. A key factor driving this trend is the opportunity to find or apply for employment within the country, particularly in the education sector. According to the Expat Insider 2025 survey by InterNations, 22% of expats moved to Vietnam specifically because they were applying for or had found a job in the country. This figure surpasses other common motivations such as adventure or challenge (13%), being recruited internationally (7%), or being sent by an employer (7%).
Once settled in Vietnam, expats often find their careers centered around the education sector. Education accounts for 42% of all expat employment, far outpacing other industries like transportation and logistics, coaching and consulting, and media, which each represent 10%. This strong presence in the education field reflects the growing demand for skilled professionals in schools, language institutes, and training centers.
The education boom aligns with Vietnam’s broader narrative as a favorable destination for expats. The country ranks 5th out of 46 global destinations, driven by impressive results in personal finances. For the fifth consecutive year, Vietnam leads in financial satisfaction, with nearly nine out of ten expats reporting that they are satisfied with the cost of living. Additionally, 87% of respondents stated that their disposable income is sufficient or even more than enough to live comfortably.
These budget-friendly conditions make Vietnam an attractive option for mid-career teachers, language instructors, and school administrators who can secure employment quickly and stretch their salaries further compared to many other global hubs. The country also holds an 11th place in the Working Abroad Index, reflecting positive scores across several key areas: career prospects, salary, job security, work-life balance, and overall job satisfaction.
While not at the top of the global rankings, these results indicate a supportive environment for those seeking roles in classrooms and training settings. The Expat Insider 2025 survey, conducted by InterNations in February 2025, gathered insights from a diverse group of expats. The online questionnaire was promoted through InterNations’ community, newsletter, and social media platforms, but it was open to all expats regardless of membership status.
The survey included participants from various backgrounds, such as foreign assignees, international retirees, self-made expats, and individuals who moved abroad for different reasons. A total of 10,085 expats took part, representing 172 nationalities across the globe.
Vietnam's position in the top five is behind Panama, Colombia, Mexico, and Thailand. Following Vietnam in the global ranking are China in 6th place, followed by the UAE, Indonesia, Spain, and Malaysia. These rankings highlight Vietnam's growing reputation as a hub for expats looking to build careers, especially in education and related fields.
